Abstract: Several companies around the globe rely on cloud computing to build robust and reliable services for their business operations (e.g., eBay, Amazon, Skype) mainly to handle heavy load conditions (e.g., seasonal sales, Internet-scale malicious attacks). Testing robustness and reliability of cloud computing services is a hard activity, the state of the art shows that the existing testing techniques suffer to handle aspects, such as: the scale of the cloud, the dynamism of the nodes, and the amount of data and load. In general, these testing techniques rely on a combination of unit tests with some “mocking” approach that may hide the cloud aspects and may not be suited for large-scale testing. In this talk, I will present an overview of key aspects for testing robustness of cloud computing services. I will explore new testing approaches based on recent results and also offer some thoughts and a research agenda for testing orders of magnitude.
Bio: Eduardo received his Computer Science Ph.D., with high honors (félicitations du jury), from the University of Nantes, France, in 2009 where he worked on testing distributed hash tables supervised by Patrick Valduriez and Gerson Sunyé (LINA ATLAS-GDD Team). He received his Computer Science M.S. from the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil, in 2004 where he worked on benchmarking relational database systems for data-analytics. From 1998 to 2005 he worked as an engineer in database technology at HSBC Bank, GVT Telecom, and UFPR Foundation. He his currently an assistant professor at the UFPR where he was Deputy Head of the Graduate Program in Computer Science from 2010 to 2012. In 2013, he was the Publicity Chair of the IEEE ICST 2013.
