Funded PhD Scholarships available: A tax-free stipend between €16,500 and €19,000 a year is available, as well as fully paid tuition, equipment and conference expenses. The studentships will involve the candidates working closely with the industry partners to address realistic problems and develop appropriate solutions. The ability to integrate the candidate's research with the relevant industrial research and development teams will be an important element in the successful delivery of this research. Applicants should have a 1st Class or Upper 2nd Class Honours Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline. The studentships are for 4 years and will be based in Lero at a number of academic partners, including University College Dublin, Dublin City University, and Trinity College Dublin.

All incoming PhD students will be enrolled in LGSSE ([http://www.lero.ie/lgsse Lero Graduate School in Software Engineering]) the main education initiative of Lero. Lero’s research focus is on Evolving Critical Systems (ECS) – complex, high-value and long- lived software which must be capable of change over time without any loss of quality, reliability, safety or predictability. The Lero academic team includes researchers from the University of Limerick, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, Dundalk Institute of Technology and NUI Galway, while the strategic industrial partner is IBM.

This project will focus on research topics related to Software Performance Engineering; in particular, research that will lead to the development of Data Analytics tools to automatically monitor and detect performance problems in cloud-based enterprise systems, for example inefficient garbage collection or problems that can be detected in system-level logs. Application domains may include Smart Cities/Infrastructure, Mobile and Social Communications.

These MSc positions will be based part-time in IBM’s Software Lab with the remainder of the time in the Performance Engineering Lab at the UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics.

These 2-year MSc positions are fully funded by Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre through Science Foundation Ireland. The successful candidates will receive a tax-free salary stipend and full coverage of their UCD Research Master’s fees. PEL UCD and IBM Software Lab in Dublin have a long-standing research relationship, where the majority of students have been offered full-time positions in IBM after completing their studies. In all cases, graduated students have found that the uniqueness of this research MSc has helped to fast tracked their career progression.

The Performance Engineering Lab at University College Dublin has an opening for two ambitious MSc students to work on a collaborative research project with IBM’s Software Laboratory in Dublin. This is an exciting opportunity to gain industrial software engineering experience with the world’s largest IT and consulting company, while also studying for a research-based MSc in the School of Computer Science and Informatics at UCD.

This project will focus on research topics related to Software Performance Engineering; in particular, research that will lead to the development of Data Analytics tools to automatically monitor and detect performance problems in cloud-based enterprise systems, for example inefficient garbage collection or problems that can be detected in system-level logs.
